World Marrow Donor Day 2017

World Marrow Donor Day was marked in 2017, internationally, on Saturday, September 16. The event, which aimed to thank the millions of donors registered in hematopoietic stem cell donor registries around the world, was initiated by the International Association of Marrow Donors.
This year, in Romania, the National Registry of Voluntary Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donors marks World Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donor Day within the 5th edition of the “Donate a Chance at Life: Be the Hero in the Shadow!” Campaign, thus joining the over 50 countries that celebrate this day.

In Bucharest, on World Marrow Donor Day 2017, in Alexandru Ioan Cuza Park, an awareness-raising event was organized on the importance of voluntary (unrelated) hematopoietic stem cell donors for patients in need of bone marrow transplantation. A press conference was also held, during which the latest data on the activity of the National Registry of Voluntary Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donors and the bone marrow transplantation procedures facilitated by the Registry were presented, both for Romanian and foreign patients.

The event is organized as a sign of gratitude and thanks to donors from around the world who have helped hundreds of thousands of patients, including patients from Romania.
